Preview vs a real edit
macOS Preview can highlight, draw, and drop a signature image. That covers “mark up a homework PDF”. It does not cover “change the date in paragraph two”. Acrobat does, and then asks for a subscription. The search “how to edit pdf on mac free” jumped because people hit that paywall.
Mac steps
- Save the PDF to Desktop so you can drag it.
- Open Edit PDF. Chrome and Safari both work. You do not need an extension.
- Drop the file. If the text will not select, the PDF is a scan — run OCR PDF or stop and use Sign PDF only.
- Download the edited file next to the original. Keep the original until you have checked the new one.
Signature on a Mac trackpad
A trackpad signature in Preview is often a shaky PNG. Sign PDF stores the stroke on the page. For a crop of a scanner bed, use Crop PDF — Preview’s crop is easy to undo by accident when you re-export.
The same steps work on iPhone Safari if the file is in Files. A desktop window is easier for multi-page contracts.
