What converts cleanly

Headings, paragraphs, lists, and simple tables become pages. A wild text box from an old template may move. If the layout is the whole point, open the file in Word once, export there, and only use this tool when that computer is not available.

Steps

  1. Start from .docx, not a .doc from 2003 if you can resave it.
  2. Drop it on Word to PDF.
  3. Open the PDF and check page breaks, especially tables that were already tight.
  4. If a portal caps the size, run Compress PDF. Born-digital letters are often already small.

The other direction

If someone sent a PDF and you need Word, that is PDF to Word, not this tool. Going Word → PDF → Word again will not improve the file.
