Why most “free compressors” are not free
Search “best free pdf compressor 2026” and the first screen is a carousel of tools that accept a file, spin a progress bar, then ask for an email before page two. That model exists because uploading your PDF is the product. The compressor is a funnel.

How to actually hit 100KB
- Crop scanner margins with Crop PDF so you are not encoding black edges.
- Open Compress PDF and start around 0.72. If the file is still huge, step down toward 0.45.
- Photographs shrink more than digital-born text. A contract made in Word is often already small; a 20-page phone scan is not.
- If a portal wants exactly 100KB, export PDF to JPG at a lower quality and rebuild with JPG to PDF.
Quality vs size
Below ~0.5, small type in scans starts to break up. For a visa form, stay at 0.7 and crop harder instead. For an archive of receipts, 0.45 is fine.
Privacy
A compressor that “needs the cloud for quality” is selling a sentence. JPEG encoding is a solved local problem. If a site cannot explain where the file goes, do not use it on a passport scan.
